Up High at Brasstown Bald

At 4,784 feet above sea level, Brasstown Bald is the highest point in Georgia. The recreation area and visitor center is just a short drive from other popular visitor destinations including Blairsville, Hiawassee, and the Bavarian town of Helen.

Nestled within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests, Brasstown Bald offers an extensive observation deck boasting majestic 360-degree views of the surrounding area, including four states (Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina) and, on a very clear day, the Atlanta Skyline. Visitors can enjoy massive green landscapes in the spring and summer months and layers of reds, golds, and oranges in the fall.

Stop by the mountaintop natural science and history museum to learn more about Brasstown Bald's history (the theater plays a short video every half-hour). Pick up locally made goods at the general store and gift shop. There are three trailheads just off the parking area that will take you up to the observation deck. If you don't feel like walking, there area busses that run throughout the day that will take visitors to the top. A picnic area is available for an after-hike lunch.

Know Before You Go:

  • Leashed dogs are permitted on site.

  • Dogs are allowed on the shuttle but NOT in the store, museum, elevator or theater. Only Service Animals are allowed inside these facilities.

  • Drones are NOT allowed as Brasstown Bald is located within designated wilderness areas where drones are not permitted.

  • Check website for seasonal updates before your visit due to weather and, at the moment, national restrictions.
