History at Myrtle Hill

Overlooking Rome's historic downtown, Myrtle Hill Cemetery offers panoramic views of the Etowah Valley to the east and the Appalachian foothills to the south. You can either climb the cemetery's six terraces or drive up the winding path, though only with a small vehicle.
Myrtle Hill has a rich history. It has been the resting place of more than 20,000 Romans since 1857. With the help of the cemetery's Mobile App Tour, you can learn all about the resting pioneers, heroes, and founders. A few notable grave sites include Ellen Axson Wilson (First Lady of the United States), John Wisdom (the Paul Revere of the South), the family of Martha Berry and more.
While exploring a cemetery may sound a little on the morbid side, doing so is one of the best ways to learn how and by whom cities are founded and expand your education in Georgia history.
